Nintendo Wii Shortage
According to the BBC, a chronic shortage of Nintendo’s Wii console could mean disappointment for those putting it at the top of their Christmas list. This was the story in 2007 so how has 2008 faired for those choosing wii as a gift. Is buying Nintendo wii online better?
In 2007 high street retailers were struggling to keep up with demand for the console, which had been in short supply for months due to its popularity. Nintendo wii online sales were also pushed.
Nintendo said it was "doing everything possible" to keep up with demand this year and so far there doesn’t seem to be a major problem..
Nintendo has pushed to increase stocks globally by over 2 million for 2008.
"The demand through online sales for Wii hardware globally has been unprecedented and higher than Nintendo could ever have anticipated," said a spokeswoman.
"Nintendo is now in a position in which seasonality demand trends are being broken, therefore the demand for Wii online hardware is constant throughout the whole year globally. Due to this phenomenon it is possible that the demand for Wii hardware may outstrip supply," she said.
"Although we’re receiving regular deliveries from Nintendo, Sony and Microsoft and getting the products onto the shelves as fast as we can – it’s possible that demand will outstrip supplies on some products, for example the Nintendo Wii, which has been hugely popular all through the year," read a 2007 statement from high street gaming specialist Game.
Nintendo wii online sales just keep climbing and the console seems as popular as ever in 2008.
It’s not like Nintendo doesn’t have the time, cash or know-how to ramp up production. Sure, we don’t know all the ins and outs of supply chain management, but it sounds more like Nintendo is enjoying its "can’t keep ‘em on the shelves" status a bit too much to seriously make an attempt at meeting demand.
